Macbook - Copy a File to a USB Stick

This one is for John from our U3A outreach clinic. He has a file that he wishes to send  to someone. Unfortunately, it is far too big to email. (There is some bad news at the end of this article)

(This is the sort of thing that would be best done by copying the file to the Cloud and sending a link to the file but you would have to have a Google or Microsoft account for that and the other person would have to know how to download it.  The next best way is to send it on a USB stick.)

#BEWARE# - TalkTalk Phone Scammers, AGAIN!

Another of our UKOnline clients has fallen foul of the TalkTalk scammers. This client is someone who knows his way around a computer but was still taken in by them.

They told him that they were from TalkTalk and were checking the lines, servers and routers. They talked him into downloading a remote control program that gave the scammers access to his laptop.

They were accessing his files when he cottoned on and hit the power button. Unluckily, they had already set a password on his laptop. Luckily, he had interrupted them before they could delete his restore points and I was able to restore the laptop back to a previous point.

Windows 10 - Download & Install Malwarebytes virus checker

This is another one for Ken. He wants to download and install Malwarebytes virus checker on his desktop PC.

'Downloading' is the name given to the process of copying a file from a large computer on the internet onto your home computer.

'Installing' is the name given to the process where a software program makes itself ready to be used on your home computer.

'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' is a program that scans your computer and finds viruses that the normal virus checkers don't even look for. We will be downloading and installing the free version.

Windows 10 - Connect to WIFI with a Password

This one is for Ken so that he can connect to Wifi down at the club.

Your computer won't automatically connect to the internet when you take it to a new place. A laptop or tablet or phone connects to the Internet through Wifi (short-range wireless signal).

A Wifi connection is usually protected by a Wifi password which needs to be entered into the laptop. You only have to enter the password once, the laptop will remember it after that and automatically connect to that Wifi whenever it is near to it.

# BEWARE - Lost Chromebook Files!

Last Friday, a client at our UKOnline computer clinic had a problem with lost photos on a Chromebook.  After looking at the problem online, it was found that many other people have experienced problems with Chromebook storage and lost files.

It is recommended that people do not use the Chromebook's internal storage to store files on any long-term basis. Google sees the internal storage only as temporary storage and recommends that files be stored online in the Google Drive.

In their own words, taken from a Google Help page -
'As far as the Downloads area is concerned, you will see many posts recommending the Downloads are be treated as temporary storage only. Anything you want to keep must be stored in the Drive area (or USB/SD/ alternative cloud storage).  The rule of thumb, especially for power users is to NOT keep long term items in the Downloads folder. I usually just use my downloads folder as temporary storage and keep the majority of my files on my external HDD.'

Windows 10 - Anniversary Upgrade Stuck at 99%

Some users are reporting that their Windows 10 Anniversary upgrades are getting stuck at 99%.
Microsoft's advice is to wait until the upgrade finishes which they say could take all day and there's no guarantee that it will work.

An alternative method that seems to be working OK is to manually install it using a Microsoft Program called the 'Media Creation Tool'.

1)  Click here to download the Media Creation Tool. The program will be downloaded to the 'Downloads' folder.

Windows 10 - How to find and start a program

There are at least 5 ways to find & start a program on Windows 10.
As an example, I will show the various methods to find and start the 'Windows Media Player' program.  (Click on an image to see the full size.)

Note: I'm using the Windows 10 Anniversary edition which is slightly different than the first Windows 10 as it shows the list of programs by default instead of having click on the 'all apps' icon to show the program list.

The 5 methods are -

1) A Taskbar Shortcut icon    (only if you have one.
2) A Desktop Shortcut icon   (only if you have one.
3) From a Start screen icon    (only if you have one.
4) From the Program List.
5) From a Search.

Windows 10 - anniversary update Install problem

While installing the Windows 10 anniversary update on an Acer laptop this week I had a problem with the install getting about a third of the way through when the screen went black. The laptop wouldn't respond to any keypress and could only be turned off by pressing the power button for 20 - 30 seconds.

Windows 10 - Restore the old photo import

This post explains how to restore the old import routine in Windows 10. This tip comes courtesy of Mike Lang.

With Windows 10, Microsoft brought out a new Photo app called 'Photos'. They also hid the old Photo import. The problem with the new Photo app is that it it makes it very difficult to import photos into the folder of your choice. It doesn't give you the option to name the folders. It lumps all your photos by dates.

This post is slightly more technical than most. It explains how to create a shortcut to the old import program. If anyone doesn't feel confident doing it, we can do it for you at our BAY Centre technical clinics every Friday 11am - 1pm & 1.30pm - 3.30pm (£2 per session which includes a hot drink and biscuits).

We are going to create a 'shortcut' on the desktop which will point to the old import program.

TalkTalk fined £400,000 for data breach

TalkTalk have been fined a record £400,000 by the information Commissioner's Office (ICO) after TalkTalk's large scale data breach in October 2015.

They were fined because TalkTalk hadn't taken the basic steps to protect the customer's information and they had allowed the hacker to access customer information "with ease".

156,959 people had their names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and email addresses stolen. in 15,655 cases, the attackers also stole bank account details and sort codes.

Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said, "TalkTalk's failiure to implement the most basic security measures allowed hackers to penetrate TalkTalk's system with ease".

"hacking is wrong, but that is not an excuse for companies to abdicate their security obligations. TalkTalk should and could have done more to safeguard its customer information."

What the heck is the Cloud anyway?

What is the Cloud? You keep hearing people talk about the Cloud but what exactly is it?

Initially, it was a name used to represent the whole internet but lately it has come to mean online storage or services like Facebook or Google Photos.

The Cloud (online storage) is just somewhere to store photos, documents, etc. on the internet. Some well known Cloud providers are Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Apple iCloud, Flickr, Yahoo Mail,etc..

Here is a Utube video explaining the general idea -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTNgV0O_oTg

Most Cloud access is made through a Web browser like Firefox, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, or a mobile app.
One advantage of the Cloud is that you can access your files from anywhere and on any computer just by using a Web browser.

One disadvantage is that you will need an internet connection to access the cloud.

What the heck is a Blog anyway?

Ok, just what is a blog? A large number of websites are blogs including probably the best know of all, Facebook.

A blog is a certain type of website where new articles are regularly added to it. The articles, known as ‘posts’, are usually shown in date order with the newest one at the top. Each post can have an area where people can leave comments.
